Novak Djokovic stepped up his bid for a
first title at the Cincinnati Masters on Saturday as he fought
through for a 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 defeat of qualifier Alexandr
Dolgopolov to reach the final.
Top seed Djokovic called for the doctor after the fifth game of the
second set and was given pain-killing medication for an abdominal
muscle problem.
That medical attention seemed to be enough for the winner of 24
career Masters 1000 titles who is seeking to become the first man to
win all nine in the series over the course of a career. Only
Cincinnati is missing from his collection.
Djokovic has played four Cincinnati finals without success but is
hoping to come up lucky on his fifth chance.
On Sunday he will take on either Roger Federer, the six-time
champion, or last week's Montreal winner Andy Murray.
Dolgopolov also had his physical problems, getting both feet taped
late in the match for probable blistering.
Djokovic lost the opening set but was able to use his fitness and
determination to score the win after more than two hours of battle.
"Today I was able to win with a fighting spirit," said the world
number one. "I didn't play so well and Alexandr played aggressive
tennis with a lot of variety.
"He was very close to winning this match - if he had, it would be
deserved. I stayed tough, fought and believed that I could pull it
out."
Djokovic stands 5-0 in Cincinnati semi-finals as he bids for his
seventh title of 2015.
