Mo Farah defied mid-morning heat on Wednesday to qualify for the 5,000 metres final, in his bid for an unprecedented long-distance double repeat at the world championships. Farah finished second in his heat behind Ethiopia's Yomif Kajelcha, clocking 13 minutes 19.44 seconds. The Briton won the 10,000m on the weekend. A win in the 5,000m on Saturday would make him the first athlete at the worlds to take successive doubles, and three 5,000m wins in a row. Farah also won both races at the home Olympics in London 2012. In other early action, Poland's Anita Wlodarczyk needed just one throw of 75.05m to meet the hammer throw qualifying standard of 72.50m. Wlodarczyk is unbeaten all year and became the first woman to crack 80 metres in the discipline with 81.08m. Scheduled for later in the session was qualifying in the men's triple-jump where American Christian Taylor and Cuba's Pedro Pablo Pichardo are expected to compete for gold in what could be one of the best showdowns of the entire championships. Women's 800m heats with late qualifier Caster Semenya of South Africa and men's 110m hurdles heats were also set to take place. | |||||
