Germany midfielder Traesch misses World Cup

Germany midfielder Christian Traesch will miss the World Cup over an ankle injury, assistant coach Hansi Flick said on Tuesday in the latest setback for the three-time champions.

Traesch, 22, twisted his right ankle in a friendly match in northern Italy against a local lower-league team without contact with another player on Monday night.

Coach Joachim Loew and his staff originally hoped that the injury was not grave, but Flick said he will not be able to play for six weeks.

"Christian Traesch is not available at the World Cup. We all regret this because Christian was convincing in training and would have been in the final World Cup squad," Flick said.

Along with his VfB Stuttgart team-mate Sami Khedira, the twice-capped Traesch was a candidate to take the place of captain Michael Ballack in central midfield.

Chelsea's Ballack will miss the World Cup over an ankle injury. The Bayer Leverkusen duo of Simon Rolfes (midfield) and Rene Adler (goal) are other prominent injury victims.

Germany have several other midfield options, with Flick insisting that "we have a plan" naming Heiko Westermann and Dennis Aogo who have already filled the position although they are defenders.

The World Cup runs June 11-July 11 in South Africa. Germany starts its campaign on June 13 against Australia, with Serbia and Ghana the other opponents in group D.

Loew said he will not nominate a new player after Traesch's injury. He has 25 players left in the squad which he has to trim to a final 23-man lineup by June 1.

Also on Tuesday, the first four Bayern Munich players - Mario Gomez Miroslav Klose, Thomas Mueller and Holger Badstuber - joined the squad. Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger and goalkeeper Hans-Joerg Butt will follow on Wednesday.

The seven arrived later as Munich were playing in the German cup final on May 15 and the Champions League final on May 22. Loew will most likely rest lahm and Schweinsteiger for the next tune-up match on Saturday against Hungary.
