Novak Djokovic wrote in Chinese --- on the
television camera lens after earning his 25th win without a loss at
the China Open on Tuesday.
The world number one crushed Italian Simone Bolelli 6-1, 6-1 then
scrambled frantically in his tennis bag to try and find the notes he
brought to guide him through his impromptu calligraphy exercise.
The attempt follows on from efforts in previous years to speak some
rudimentary Chinese to fans on occasion.
Djokovic has been dominant in the capital, losing a mere three sets
in 53 now played. He won the title in 2009-2010, 2012-2014 and
claimed his 64th match victory of a season in which he owns seven
trophies including Wimbledon and the US Open.
He fired seven aces and 22 winners against just 14 unforced errors,
saving all five break points he faced. His next opponent is Chinese
wild card Zhang Ze.
The top seed was joined in the second round at the Olympic stadium by
third-seeded Rafael Nadal, who was surprisingly broken four times by
number 270 Chinese Wu Du in a 6-4, 6-4 result.
Nadal won the Beijing title a decade ago on his debut and played a
2013 final. His latest opponent served as a ballboy for the Spaniard
when the year-end finals were played in Shanghai through 2008.
Nadal's narrow escape was his 46th victory of a so-so season in which
he failed to win a grand slam title, ending a streak of 10
consecutive years; his best 2015 results at a major were the
quarter-finals at the Australian Open and Roland Garros, where he
owns a record nine trophies.
Nadal is fighting to reach his customary place in the season's
wrap-up event next month in London.
Nadal had to work his way out of trouble after winning the opening
set against the local outsider as he faced treble break-point
situations.
"(It) looked like the match was under control with 6-4, 1-0, but then
the situation changed," Nadal said. "I think I played little bit too
much far away from the baseline.
"But in the last three games of the match I was playing better. I hit
some good forehands down the line and that's why I finished the match
well and with the victory."
Nadal next faces Vasek Pospisil after the Canadian rallied past
Victor Estrella Burgos 4-6, 7-5, 6-0.
"I know it is obvious that I need results, but we are almost at the
end of this season and I have time to keep playing the last
tournaments of the year with the chance to practise the things that I
need to do for next year."
In women's play at the ATP-WTA tournament, US Open winner Flavia
Pennetta advanced over Brazil's Teliana Pereira 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 while
Ana Ivanovic beat Wuhan weekend champion Venus Williams 7-6 (7-3),
6-2.
Caroline Wozniacki ignored the day's heavy smog over the capital to
beat China's Wang Qiang 7-5, 6-0.
"We are used to it, we just play," said the former number one Dane,
who had to work to recover after dropping the opening set.
"It was a slow start. She started off playing pretty well. But I kind
of stood a little too far back behind the baseline and let her be
able to play her game.
"Once I stepped it in a little bit and took the ball a little
earlier,I felt I was more in control and started to play better."
The eighth seed lined up a third-round contest against German 10th
seed Angelique Kerber, who defeated Dominika Cibulkova 6-2, 6-4.
Swiss Timea Bacsinszky, the number 12, advanced past Mariana
Duque-Marino 7-5, 6-2 while 13th seed Andrea Petkovic put out
Australian Samantha Stosur.
