David Ferrer stepped up his bid to qualify for
one of four remaining spots in the season-ending ATP finals next
month, winning into the quarter-finals of the Malaysian Open on
Thursday.
The Spaniard who missed several months of spring and summer play
through injury, beat Czech veteran Radek Stepanek 7-5, 6-3, serving
out the victory on his second try.
Ferrer recovered from a breakdown in the opening set as the number
eight in the season points race to London bids for a seventh year-end
spot.
Compatriot and second seed Feliciano Lopez reached the last eight
with a defeat of German Misha Zverev 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) while fourth seed
Grigor Dimitrov came from 2-4 down in the third set to open with a
2-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory against Portugal's Joao Sousa, last weekend's
losing finalist to Milos Raonic in St Petersburg.
Canadian eighth seed Vasek Pospisil beat Marcos Baghdatis 7-6 (7-2),
3-6, 6-3 in the Malaysian capital to reach his third quarter-final of
the season.
Pospisil sent over 11 aces on the way to his 20th win of the season
in two and a half hours as he put out the Kuala Lumpur finalist of
four years ago.
"I didn't really have a strategy," said Pospisil, who overcame
late-match cramping. "I was just trying to stand on the court, be
able to play the points and try to win.
"When I saw the ball I just tried to hit it hard and keep the points
short. I played well, but I was just trying to get through my service
games somehow. I was fortunate for sure to have won that."
The Wimbledon quarter-finalist next plays Lopez, who won their
previous meeting.
