Sprinter Su Bingtian was hailed as China's newest star athlete Monday after he competed as the first Asian in a 100 metres world championship final the previous day. Su finished ninth and last in 10.06 seconds in the blue riband race won by Jamaican superstar Usain Bolt, but just having qualified made the nation proud. "He is the pride of Asia and of all Chinese," Jinghua Shibao newspaper said. The Tencent web portal named Su "the light of Asia" and said his performance could be used as a metaphor that "China's speed has unlimited potential." The China Daily said his presence added "an extra dimension to the anticipated hero-villain showdown of Bolt versus (Justin) Gatlin." Su, 25, reached the final by matching his personal best 9.99 seconds in the semis. Despite bringing up the rear in the final, he was cheered loudly by the fans during his lap of honour draped in a Chinese flag. "Not in my wildest dreams did I believe I could reach a final," he said. "I felt honoured as a Chinese to run in the 100m final. I think this experience will be very helpful for me." Gatlin was quoted as saying "I am happy for him." Chinese coach Yuan Guoqiang revealed that Su achieved his breakthrough by modifying his start during the winter from the right to the left foot. | |||||
