Former Formula One driver Justin Wilson is in a coma
after being struck on the head by debris following an accident at an
IndyCar race in the United States late Sunday.
"Justin Wilson suffered a severe head injury during the race August
23 at Pocono Raceway," a statement from organizers said. "He is in a
coma and listed in critical condition while undergoing further
evaluation."
The 37-year-old Briton, who drives for Andretti Autosport, was
air-lifted to hospital after the accident occurred in the 179th of
200 laps of the Indy Car race on the Long Pond track in Pennsylvania.
Wilson appeared to be struck on the head by debris which flew from
the car of Sage Karam after he crashed in front of him. Karam was
able to leave his own car and appears to have suffered only minor
injuries.
Wilson drove for Minardi and Jaguar in the 2003 Formula One season,
securing a point for the latter at the United States Grand Prix.
