League champions Atletico Madrid have extended the contract of coach
Quique Sanchez Flores to June 2011, according to Spanish media reports
on Tuesday. Quique, 45, has become a popular figure at Atletico since taking over from Abel Resino in November 2009. He lifted the "Matresss Makers" out of relegation danger - they finished ninth in La Liga - then guided them to the finals of the new Europa League and of the Spanish King's Cup. Atletico won the Europa League final 2-1 against Fulham in Hamburg on May 12, with two goals from Uruguayan striker Diego Forlan, but lost the Spanish cup final 2-0 to Sevilla in Barcelona a week later. According to sports daily AS, Quique has asked the club to make several signings - and not to sell Forlan and fellow forward Sergio Aguero. dpa ds jb Author: Duncan Shaw | |||||
