Novak Djokovic said that the 10,000-dollar ATP fine
handed down Thursday to Australian Nick Kyrgios for a crude insult
directed at opponent Stan Wawrinka was more than fair, as he
commented a day after the incident on court at the Montreal Masters.
The 41st-ranked Kyrgios drew shock for a comment he made on court
while passing Wawrinka concerning the personal life of his
30-year-old opponent.
Australian player Thanassi Kokkinakis "banged your girlfriend,"
Kyrgios was heard saying on courtside microphones. "Sorry to tell you
that, mate."
The reference was apparently made to Croatian WTA player Donna Vecic,
linked with double grand slam winner Wawrinka after he split this
year from his wife, with whom he has a daughter.
"There is no need for this kind of behaviour. I really hope the ATP
will take major action against him this time," a furious Wawrinka
said.
Djokovic passed his opinion after reaching the quarter-finals with a
6-2, 6-1 thrashing of US player Jack Sock.
It was the 28th consecutive victory at the Masters 1000 level for
three-time Canadian titlewinner Djokovic, holder of six titles -
including the Australian Open and Wimbledon - this season.
The victory in 54 minutes put the world number one Serb into the last
eight against one of two qualifiers, Latvian Ernests Gulbis or
American Donald Young.
Frenchman Jeremy Chardy beat Ivo Karlovic 4-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4, the
victory coming 24 hours after Karlovic became the second man in
history to serve more than 10,000 aces in a career.
Djokovic had no sympathy for Kyrgios, who later apologized for his
outburst on his Facebook page: "My comments were made in the heat of
the moment and were unacceptable on many levels. In addition to the
private apology I've made, I would like to make a public apology as
well. I take full responsibility for my actions and regret what
happened."
Djokovic said that the 20-year-old had earned the hefty fine.
"He deserved it," said the top seed. "I think he's going to learn a
lesson in a hard way. Hopefully this won't happen to him anymore. I
understand that every player goes through a certain tantrums,
emotional ups and downs during the match. In a big fight and at this
level, I understand.
"But it's not, I would say, fair, and there's no excuse of directing
your tantrums to your opponent, especially to somebody that is not
even there."
