Serena Williams of the US
With a possible calendar grand slam sweep
getting major buzz as the US Open approaches, world number one Serena
Williams said on Tuesday she is doing all she can to keep her focus
on this week's Cincinnati Masters.
Williams is defending her title in the Midwest and will begin in the
second round after losing a Toronto semi-final last weekend to Swiss
teenager Belinda Bencic.
The 34-year-old Williams claimed her only title in Cincinnati last
year with a defeat of Ana Ivanovic.
The winner of 21 grand slam titles is just trying to stay in the
present as the pressure mounts for her to win all four grand slam
singles titles in the same year - which she could do with a title in
New York.
"I don't have to win. I want to win, but I really just look forward
to playing," she said. "I'd like to do well here, especially after a
disappointing week last week.
"But no matter what, I would like to play technically better."
Referring to her upcoming challenge at Flushing Meadows, Williams
said: "It's cool, even though there's a lot of pressure. I would like
to win the Open more than anybody else."
Sloane Stephens started her week with an upset, beating Spanish tenth
seed Carla Suarez Navarro 6-1, 6-2.
France's Kristina Mladenovic overcame veteran Daniela Hantuchova 6-2,
6-1 and Ital?an Flavia Pennetta defeated former Australian Open
finalist Domenika Cibulkova 7-5, 6-2.
In the men's field. French 12th seed Richard Gasquet dealt tennis bad
boy Nick Kyrgios out in the first round, winning 6-2, 6-1.
Kyrgios has had a controversial few months, with his latest incident
an outburst on court last week in Montreal against Roland Garros
champion Stan Wawrinka, with the 20-year-old Australian making an
insulting remark about his opponent's personal life.
Kyrgios stands 1-4 against Gasquet, who also beat him at Wimbledon in
a fourth-round match where the Australian was accused of temporarily
tanking in defeat.
Sam Querrey beat 11th seed John Isner 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) as the
big-serving Isner begins to feel the effects of nonstop play this
hardcourt season. South African Kevin Anderson, the number 15,
advanced past Argentine Leonardo Mayer 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-1.
Croatian Borna Coric won a battle of teenaged talents as he beat
German Alexander Zverev 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5).
