The Spanish government slammed Bayern Munich coach
Josep Guardiola for taking part in a campaign in favour of Catalan
independence that constitutes "serious manipulation" according to the
government.
"Guardiola's case explains many things about what is happening. It is
a case of massive manipulation," Spain's Sports Minister Miguel
Cardenal told dpa in an interview.
Cardenal criticized the campaign Guanyarem (we shall win, in
Catalan), in which hundreds of Catalan sportspeople support a
manifesto that demands among others the creation of a Catalan Olympic
Committee and Catalan national teams. Cardenal stressed that many of
the sportspeople involved were featured in the campaign "against
their will."
Guardiola, 44, took part in the campaign through an interview in
which he explained why he supports independence for Catalonia.
An early regional election is set to be held Sunday in Catalonia. The
pro-independence camp around regional head of government Artur Mas
has turned the election into a referendum on independence. Opinion
polls indicate that the pro-independence camp might get an absolute
majority in the regional parliament.
Pro-independence parties then plan to declare independence for this
wealthy region of 7.6 million people in north-eastern Spain. Madrid
refuses to accept such a possibility.
Guardiola even agreed to be a candidate for a legislator's seat in
Sunday's election, in a symbolic last position for the
pro-independence coalition.
